A New Way of thinking...

On the 27th of February I got the privileged to have gone to the Design Indaba Simulcast in Port Elizabeth! It was a day full of listening to different speakers... But there were two architects that stood out to me and have a strong influence on the design of the office of the future... The two architects were Michael Rojkind and Clive Wilkinson...

Michael Rojkind gave me an incite into how to push the boundaries in futuristic design... He is an architect that thinks in a very contemporary way, and that appealed to me. He asked what is your space? What are you working with? And that made me think about how can I think about the space that I am using in a completely different way than the norm... He also mentioned that we should embrace instability and FLEXIBILITY... and that is to me what stood out.. that is where the future is headed...

Clive Wilkinson explained what the office of the future will look like, and it gave me more information in which direction the future is going with office design... The office of the future is to be unconfined, changeable, open systems, FLEXIBLE, mobile, and about engagement... There were a few of his designs that stood out to me... The Disney store, the JWT in New York, Mother London, Google Headquarters, The Barbarian group New York, and many more... The two that stood out to me the most was Mother London and The Barbarian Group... The two designs allow for interaction and collaboration...

Inspiration so far...

The research behind the office of the future...

The research behind my perception of the office of the future:

The first image is my thought process behind what the future involves, and how my target market is connected. My target market for the project is both generation y and generation z.

The second image is diagrams brainstorming and pin pointing what exactly my magazine is going to be about, as well as the aspects that "make up the future."

The third image is development into my concept for the project. It is however just a thought into what I can do, not 100% sure about this.

This video gave me a little preview of what life may be like in the future... It does seem a little lonely, but I really just like the development of technology...

The Office of the Future...

The aim of this blog is to follow the developments of my B.tech design proposal and taking a deeper look into how it can make people more aware of where design is going in the future... This leads me into what exactly I am doing for my B.tech year...

For my B.tech design project, I want to design The Office of the Future... I wanted to go down the route of thinking ahead and designing something that will make people more aware... Technology is a large part of our lives, and this is where the future is leading... The Office of the Future will not be purely based on designing an office, it will however be aimed at creating an environment for people to work with flexible hours...

The idea for The Office of the Future came from wanting to design a head office for a magazine company and aiming towards local designers in Port Elizabeth... As Cape Town and Johannesburg are the two major design cities, I thought it would be a great idea to create a magazine and building purely aimed at the locals... The building will be made up of the office for the magazine company, with secondary functions being an exhibition area for designers to show their work, a cafe, a grocery store, and many more functions aimed at making the lives of people easier...

As the year goes on, my idea will develop more, but this is the starting point of where I want to go... and I will hopefully inspire more people to get excited about what the future holds...
